Mukesh Ambani Reveals How Reliance Takes A Bet On Ordinary People: ‘We Empower Them To Do Extraordinary Tasks’

During his recent talk with McKinsey, Reliance Industries Ltd’s CMD, Mukesh Ambani unraveled what’s behind the veil at the company. The shifting gears with evolving technology. The focus on cleaner and greener energy. The pivot to build a deep tech stack. He also delved into the leadership principles and also the crucible of talents at the conglomerate that makes the company one of the most valued in the region.

Speaking of a key leadership principle, Ambani quipped.

“About 30 or 40 years ago, I said that another principle I should personally have is to look any of my employees in the eye. At Reliance, we tell our leaders that it’s important to have eye contact because then you express your sincerity. I think we can put all our principles to our top 100 leaders by saying, “These are our principles. We’ll do what is right. Whatever we do, we should be able to look at each other and say we are not embarrassed.”

Asia’s richest billionaire further emphasized that the ‘eye-contact” principle is the company’s ‘best insurance against any kind of risk.’

Speaking on what drives the Reliance’s verve to create a workplace with talents that form the cogwheels of the conglomerate worth billions, Ambani stated

We take ordinary people and allow them, encourage them and empower them to do extraordinary tasks. I think it is clarity about the goal, the purpose, and the mission which are the key success factors in unlocking extraordinary potential from ordinary talent.”
