Want To Succeed in Tech? Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Says This Skill Still Beats AI

In an age where artificial intelligence is reshaping the software industry, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stresses the enduring importance of strong technical fundamentals. Speaking with tech YouTuber Sajjaad Khade, Nadella emphasized that despite AI’s growing role in coding, foundational skills like computational thinking and system design remain crucial. For aspiring software engineers, mastering these core principles is key to long-term success.

When asked about advice for beginners entering an AI-dominated landscape, Nadella acknowledged that while AI tools like GitHub Copilot can assist in coding, they depend heavily on human logic and structured input. He shared a personal experience of debugging a percentile filter issue, highlighting how his foundational understanding of SQL helped him navigate the problem. This, he said, illustrates the future of coding—where humans act as architects, guiding AI to solve problems more efficiently.

Nadella also noted that AI has already become deeply embedded in Microsoft’s software development process. In a discussion with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, he revealed that AI now writes 20–30% of the code in Microsoft’s repositories. However, the strategic thinking and architecture behind that code still come from developers, showcasing the evolving collaboration between human engineers and AI systems.

For the unversed, at Microsoft Build, Nadella introduced the concept of “agentic AI,” which he said is reshaping the entire technology stack. This next phase of development is unlocking new opportunities for developers across all layers of the industry. Nadella’s vision of the future blends AI’s efficiency with human creativity and leadership, creating a more empowered and productive developer ecosystem.

Backing this vision with action, Microsoft recently launched a large-scale skilling initiative in India, in collaboration with MeitY. Aiming to train 500,000 people by 2026, the program includes the establishment of AI Catalysts Centres of Excellence, 20 AI productivity labs, and educator training across ten states. This initiative reinforces Nadella’s belief that while AI will play a bigger role, it’s those with solid fundamentals and the ability to harness AI tools who will define the future of tech.
